Strategen has spearheaded the evolution of the grid-connected energy storage market via the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA), an ad-hoc advocacy group we co-founded in 2009. Grid storage is widely accepted as the ‘holy grail’ of grid optimization and thus a key enabler of renewable energy adoption. The key challenge for energy storage as an asset class is to capture the many benefit streams that it provides, as these benefits accrue to many different stakeholders within the electric power system:

Customer + Utility + System Operator + Society
  • Reduced energy and demand costs
  • Emergency backup
  • Demand response
  • Improved reliability

  • Integration of renewables
  • Load leveling
  • T&D relief/deferral
  • Improved power quality
  • Reduced peak & spinning reserve requirements

  • Ancillary services
  • Grid integration
  • Improved grid reliability & security

  • More renewables
  • Fewer emissions
  • Lower power costs
  • More green jobs
